The black moon of August 31
When a calendar month has two new moons, the second is often called a black moon, the new moon counterpart of a blue moon. In 2027 that is the August 31 new moon in Virgo. It is invisible in the sky like every new moon, so the name is about the calendar, not anything you can see.
The eclipse new moons
Two new moons in 2027 are solar eclipses: the annular eclipse of February 6 in Aquarius and the total eclipse of August 2 in Leo, which crosses Spain, North Africa and the Middle East. Details and visibility are in Eclipses 2027.
New moons and the Chinese calendar
The Chinese lunar calendar starts each month on a new moon. The February 6 new moon is Lunar New Year, which begins the Year of the Fire Goat. In BaZi the year boundary is Li Chun on February 4 instead, which is why some January and early February birthdays change animal.
What new moons mean in astrology
A new moon is traditionally read as a beginning: a good moment to set an intention, start a habit or plant an idea that grows over the following two weeks until the full moon. The sign and house where it falls in your chart is said to show which area of life is being renewed. To find those houses, start with your free birth chart.
