Eclipses 2027: dates, signs and where to see them
2027 has two solar eclipses and three lunar eclipses. Most of them fall on the Leo and Aquarius axis, so astrologers treat 2027 as the year that theme becomes the main eclipse story. Dates below are UTC, so in the Americas an eclipse can fall on the previous evening.
The five eclipses of 2027
- February 6, annular solar eclipse in Aquarius: a "ring of fire" eclipse whose path crosses South America and the South Atlantic into West Africa. It falls on the same day as Lunar New Year.
- February 20, penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo: a soft dimming of the full Moon, visible from much of the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia.
- July 18, penumbral lunar eclipse in Capricorn: so shallow that it is barely an eclipse at all.
- August 2, total solar eclipse in Leo: one of the longest total eclipses of the century, with totality of up to about six and a half minutes near Luxor, Egypt.
- August 17, penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius: visible from the Americas and parts of western Europe and Africa.
Eclipse seasons in 2027
Eclipses come in seasons about six months apart. The February season (February 6 and 20) pairs a new beginning in Aquarius with a full Moon in Virgo. The summer season runs from July 18 to August 17 and holds three eclipses, with the total solar eclipse in Leo at its center.
What the Leo and Aquarius axis is linked with
Leo is traditionally read as self-expression, creativity, romance and children; Aquarius as friends, communities, technology and the future. Eclipses on this axis are often described as a pull between personal recognition and the good of the group. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) are said to feel them most, especially people with planets around the middle of those signs.
The eclipses and the 2027 calendar
The February 6 solar eclipse coincides with the start of the Year of the Fire Goat. Mercury is retrograde from February 9 to March 3, right inside the first eclipse season (see Mercury retrograde 2027).
Safety note
Never look at a solar eclipse with the naked eye or ordinary sunglasses. Use certified eclipse glasses or a pinhole projector, except during the brief total phase inside the path of totality. Lunar eclipses are safe to watch.

FAQ
How many eclipses are there in 2027?
Five: an annular solar eclipse on February 6, a penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20, an extremely shallow penumbral lunar eclipse on July 18, a total solar eclipse on August 2 and a penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17 (dates in UTC).
Where can I see the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse?
The path of totality crosses southern Spain, North Africa and the Middle East, including Egypt, where totality lasts more than six minutes near Luxor. A partial eclipse is visible across Europe, Africa and western Asia.
Is the July 18, 2027 lunar eclipse visible?
In practice, no. The Moon only grazes the edge of the Earth's outer shadow, so the dimming is too slight to notice and some eclipse lists do not count it.
What do eclipses mean in astrology?
Eclipses are traditionally read as turning points: solar eclipses as beginnings and lunar eclipses as endings or culminations. They matter most when they fall close to a planet or angle in your own chart.
