The 14 main stars of Zi Wei Dou Shu

Star & Fate Academy · 7 min read · Updated

Zi Wei Dou Shu, often translated as Purple Star Astrology, arranges more than a hundred named stars into a chart of twelve palaces. They are not physical stars you can see; they are calculated points placed according to your lunar birth date and two-hour birth period. Of all of them, fourteen major stars carry the most weight. This guide introduces them.

How the stars are placed

First the chart works out the Life Palace from the lunar month and birth hour. Then it determines a "five elements bureau" from the Life Palace and the year stem. Together with the lunar day, that bureau sets where the Zi Wei star lands. The other thirteen major stars follow in fixed patterns from Zi Wei's position. So once Zi Wei is placed, the whole set is placed.

The Tian Fu group (eight stars)

Main stars in palaces

A star's meaning depends on the palace it sits in. Tai Yang in the Career palace is read differently from Tai Yang in the Spouse palace. Readers also note each star's brightness (how strong it is in that position), the minor stars around it, and the Four Transformations triggered by the birth year stem. A single star name is a starting point, not a full description.

What if my Life Palace has no main star?

Because fourteen stars are spread over twelve palaces, some palaces always end up with none of them. If your Life Palace is empty of major stars, the common practice is to "borrow" the major stars from the opposite palace, the Migration palace, and read them with a lighter touch. It does not mean anything is missing from you.

Pairs that sit together

Several stars often share a palace, such as Zi Wei with Tian Fu, or Tai Yang with Tai Yin. Combinations are read as a blend; Zi Wei with Po Jun, for example, is often described as a leader who likes to rebuild.

Getting started

  1. Generate a Zi Wei chart with your birth date and time.
  2. Find your Life Palace and note its main star or stars.
  3. Read the descriptions above, then look at the three palaces that form a triangle with it (Wealth, Career and Migration).
